A few days ago I had the chance of going back to the Retezat Mountains, a piece of the Carpathians near the town of Hateg, which can be used as a base. These mountains represent what is probably the best part of the Carpathians in Romania. It is here where you can admire more than 50 glacier lakes, beautiful virgin forests, fast-moving rivers, and hundreds of waterfalls and alpine peaks.
While in the Retezat Mountains, don’t miss Bucura Lake, the largest glacier lake in Romania; Zănoaga Lake, the deepest lake in Romania; the Pietrele Valley; Vârful Peleaga, the highest peak (2509m); and my personal favourite, Galeşu Lake.
As a photographer, you’ll find this part of the Carpathian Mountains a true paradise. My favourites are the rivers with their waterfalls and big stones covered with green grass, the alpine views, and of course, the lakes themselves. It’s a great pleasure to shoot the rivers during a cloudy day, but in this case, a polariser is a must.
Below, you can see several pictures I took during my last trip in the Retezat Mountains.
