Almost 30 years after the fall of communism, Romania is in progress of finishing the only major project, an Orthodox Cathedral. The church is nothing else but an unfinished reinforced concrete cake with a cross on top of it. It is built by the Romanian Orthodox Church, one of the most toxic Romanian institutions. The church is full of priests living in the past, lead by a group of episcopes who were in good relations with the former communist regime. Today, they back up the corrupt regime in Romania.
The total cost so far for this concrete cake? Just 121 million Euros. Mind you, it’s unfinished. Lots of millions will end up in this ugly construction, while hospitals, schools and roads in Romania are in a very bad state.
Promoting a nationalist rhetoric, the politicians and the priests help each other in order to achieve their interests. There is nothing new in this story. The Romanian Orthodox Church never lost the occasion to work with all these corrupt politicians. It was an important supporter of slavery, it was involved in the fascist movement of the 20th century and later, it worked handed in hand with the communist regime.
Yes, the Romanian Orthodox Church had an important role in the history of Romania as a nation. Indeed, there were many priests in the 40s and 50s who died in the communist prisons. Yes, religion is a key factor in the lives of many Romanians, after all, Romania is the most religious state in EU. Whether you like it or not, whether you are a believer or not, Christianity played an important role in our history and culture, but nothing can be an excuse for such huge expenses and especially for the way this public money was given to the church. Once again, the main church from Romania proves that it has no moral code and that the religion for them is nothing else but a very profitable business.
