As a tour guide I try to transform each place – hotel, restaurant or any other stop – into a unique experience. I’ve never thought I could transform a public toilet into a great tourist destination.
Those who roam the recently renovated citadel of Alba Iulia, a Vauban fortification which dates back to the 18th century, should know that beside the elegant gates, massive walls surrounded by a wide moat, Roman ruins, Baroque buildings, museums, old churches or defiant statues, can enjoy now a different and quite unique experience.
During the recent renovations the public toilet was transformed into a museum by itself. Located right next to the Mihai Viteazul statue, the underground public toilet surrounds an old medieval wall which was part of a former wheat deposit dating back to the 17th century. The total cost for the renovation of this toilet reached 370,000 Euros. For a small entrance fee you get to visit a piece of local history and release the pressure of your bladder. So, you win twice.
On the other hand, taking in consideration the price of the International Space Station toilet – about US $19 million – then the price of the public toilet from Alba Iulia is very cheap indeed.
